'Moving' on Up!

Here we go again! We’re currently under contract on a new (old) house in Winnetka Heights. Its less than a mile from the house we live in now. Very thankful we got the chance to confirm we love Oak Cliff and hopefully will be our home for a very long time. Everyone keeps laughing at me when I say that. We’re currently averaging a year for the last 4 places we’ve lived… so they may have a point!

This one has lots of opportunity for improvement but we absolutely love the bones and the character. The previous owner lived there for 30 years before selling it to us. You can tell he took immaculate care of it and the updates he did make are high end. He just couldn’t decide on what he wanted to do in the kitchen, so he just had what felt like the most ad hoc/temporary kitchen set up. Perfect for us because we can design one we love!

It also only has one an a half baths. He was single so probably didn’t miss it much but with 3 girls in the house, we’ll definitely need more space! The plan is to add a master bath and closet upstairs. JWill keep you posted on the progress! So many ideas, so little time.

Wish us luck!

Overnight in Philly then Amish country!

We had such a lovely weekend with John and CB (and Conrad and Isa!!)! We met in London through mutual friends, John helped Ross get a job at concentra who he still works for and we all have become lifelong friends since then! It’s always so much fun to get together and we have the best adventures. First as a party of 4 and now 8!

We arrived Thursday evening to a freezing cold Philadelphia and were greeted by friendly faces and a big pot of homemade chili and beer bread. CB sure knows the way to our hearts!

After meeting up with a few of Ross’ coworkers, we headed out to Lancaster County on Friday for a short stay in the country. Man was it awesome! That part of the country is so beautiful, it made this farm girl’s heart so happy and the kids loved seeing all the animals and stretching their legs after so many hours in the car!

A few highlights:

  • A tour of a working dairy from the sweetest patriarch, Alfred

  • Buggy ride to get some homemade cookies and lemonade!

  • Lunch at a local market

  • Saying hi to all the farm animals at our Airbnb and trying our hand at fishing! Don’t worry we didn’t catch anything - I think Ross and I are collectively the worst (least patient) fishermen in the world; Finley is a lost cause

  • Family-style dinner at a classic Amish restaurant. I loved the buttery mashed potatoes and shoo-fly pie!

I would highly recommend Pennsylvania and Amish country to anyone ready for a change of pace and fun weekend!!

A dive bar, craft coffee and fish!

We made it into Baltimore late Wednesday night after the toughest day of driving yet. There was an accident that shut down the highway so we had to detour - in reality, we’d already detoured so mama could get some chick fil a and just didn’t get back on the highway. Then we hit some pretty nasty, rainy weather. Thankfully we’d already decided to stop in Baltimore for the night rather than making it all the way to Philly.

We made it in later than expected and the lobster roll place we planned to grab dinner at closed at 7… what kind of restaurant closes at 7?? After that, it was a bit touch and go getting two sleepy, hungry, slightly frantic kids out the door at 7:15 with impending rain to walk to dinner in downtown Baltimore.. but we found a place with crab cakes!! Ross’ only Baltimore request and they didn’t disappoint. We found the greatest dive bar with such a classic feel down a back alley. Cold beer for Ross + bottomless watered down orange juice for the the kids = a happy little fam. Plus, we all loved our dinners and had the sweetest server! Couldn’t have turned into a better evening.

The next morning, we had a beautiful walk to coffee followed by the national aquarium for mom and the kids while ross took a work call from the hotel. I was a little shocked to hear I couldn’t bring the stroller but in the end, it was probably for the best since the kids would have both wanted to explore anyway and they were *almost perfect angels until the very end. Why do they make you walk through the gift shop on the way out?!? Just cruel!! We made it out alive and had the best time - sharks, dolphins, fish galore. We’ve been to aquariums all over the world, and I really think this one was one of the best - I’m sure that was helped by the fact that it was not crowded at all.

Now we’re headed into Philly for a night at the Candeto’s!

Another state to check off the list!

Neither Ross or I have been to Ohio or West Virginia, so it’s been fun to check them off the list. Ross and his family loved road trips so he got to see a lot of the country growing up. With my job at ISN, I got to travel frequently and to places off the beaten path. Seeing new places was part of the motivation behind the trip and a big part of the route we chose.

We took a little longer drive up to Morgantown so we could see more of the state; luckily, we chose a route that only added 30 minutes and got us off the interstate! We had a lovely lunch at Mango Latin Cafe in Parkersburg. Who knew we’d find delicious empanadas and fried plantain in rural West Virginia!

In Morgantown, we stayed at a great hotel - Marriott of course, thanks to all of Ross’ points from work. Best part was the indoor pool! The kids have been in swim lessons for a few months and Finley needed somewhere to ‘practice her moves’.

We took a lovely stroll along the waterfront into town for some Cold Stone ice cream. I have always loved ice cream, and in college, Ross worked at a Cold Stone which meant I basically lived there for a semester, and birthday cake remix was all I ever ordered. Every couple years, I have to make it back to see if I hype it up in my head or it really is that good. It really is that good. Finn and Ry agreed, and although they insisted on ordering plain chocolate, they only wanted mine!!

After that, we checked out Morgantown Brewing Co for a snack and a six pack to go, then Mountain State Brewing which had great pizza. Then home for the end of Shrek! It’s pretty hilarious what a novelty cable TV to the kids - commercials are mind blowing and I think Finley actually thinks it’s magic. She says to Riley, ‘you can’t watch Thomas; we have to see what the TV picks!’

After movie night, it’s lights off for everyone. Riley crashes immediately and Finley wiggles around for 45 minutes and comes up with every possible excuse for not actually going to sleep…

For breakfast the next morning, we found a joint called Grandma Jean’s Country Cafe. It was exactly what we were looking for in local, classic, diner fare. And I actually felt like I was sitting in grandma Jean’s living room. So local, so cool.

Did you know West Virginia split from Virginia during the civil war? Virginia joined the confederacy but West Virginia said no way, we stay!

Who says road trips are hard?

I know it’s early so I’ll be saying a few prayers after this, but so far the kids are absolutely crushing their first big road trip together. We have found a good routine around how we structure our drives and hotel stays. I’m not saying there hasn’t been frustration.. the kids are two and three and Ross and I have said multiple times what funny little humans we have.. but hey! Look at the two of us; what else can we expect?

We made it to Columbus, OH by Monday also known as Day 4. First stop was an awesome brewery called Seven Sons which had an Indian food truck for a snack and then we picked up some tacos to go before heading back to our hotel for family movie night!

The next morning, we grabbed breakfast at the Fox in the Snow Cafe… wow that was the best cinnamon roll we’ve ever had. And I’m 90% sure the kids had more steel cut oatmeal than brown sugar but we’ll never be sure.. they both devoured their bowls!

We swung by Ohio State, saw The Horseshoe and headed out of town!

Horse Heaven

I’m not overly proud of it, but our first stop in Kentucky was White Castle for sliders since Ross had never been, I had to use the bathroom and the kids were munchy. Finley literally asked ‘what’s this?’ when she saw the color of the meat in her burger.

Next up was a stop on the bourbon trail. I found a little distillery called Boundary Oaks - it had good reviews and an old truck parked out front. Happy Ross, happy Riley. Bonus points for the distillery cat! Ross did a little tasting and we picked out a couple bottles - one to keep and one to give away! It was also a nice detour off the highway before heading to the races.

Nothing makes me happier than seeing how much Finley loves horses. We tried taking the kids to the races in Hong Kong only to learn they didn’t allow minors. Ever since then, we’ve been so excited to go with Finn and Ry. We just never imagined their first race day would be at Churchill Downs!!!! It was pretty special and I can only begin to imagine what the Derby would be like.

Wow we packed a lot into 24 hours in Louisville! The next day, we got to check something else off the bucket list and tour the Louisville Slugger Factory. Ross was absolutely gitty and he even got a personalized bat - a black one of course, like Griffey and Jeter:)

After lunch and another quick distillery stop, we were off to our next state!

Nashville with friends!

We woke up in Memphis, enjoyed breakfast in our room and hit the road to Music City, USA.. unfortunately because of covid, the music stopped 8 months ago but that didn’t keep us from having an amazing time with great friends.

Jess and I worked at ISN for many years and she is now one of my closest friends - it’s so special to now see our little ones enjoy each other so much! Ross and I were in Nashville years ago but it was so fun to be back and explore with locals. Jess, Dave Emmie and Tommy took us on a hike around a nearby lake which was gorgeous! Safe to say, pregnant, out of shape Katie struggled more than anyone else on the walk!

That evening we had a blast catching up, playing in their backyard and picking up craft beer, kombucha and Martin’s BBQ! It was Finley’s first ‘sleepover’ in Emmie’s room and it went… terribly. The girls tried for over an hour and there were multiple cases of good nights, giggles, potty, poopy and paint pen all over!!! See photo below for evidence ;)

After a coffee, oatmeal and multiple goodbyes in the morning we headed to Kentucky!

Road Trip Day 1.

As most of you know, we have a lot of hairbrained ideas… i.e. we bought a VW van in Sydney and shipped her home after we were chased home to Texas during Covid. We moved to Hong Kong via Australia with a two month old and lived to tell the tale. Now we’re off on a ‘little’ road trip up to Philly to visit our close friends and see a few of Ross’ colleagues!

First stop Memphis! We left Friday after lunch and made the first long leg of the trip. Just over 6.5 hours. We did it with just two big stops for coffee and dinner and a couple for the other essentials - beer to go and gas. Love getting to share our love of travel with our kiddos - Finley is so curious about all the different cities we’re seeing and learning about the different states. Riley likes cars. It’s such a fun age for a trip like this!

Seoul and Beyond

Safe to say we have the travel bug again. Moving to Hong Kong, we knew it would be different than London and all the traveling we did. I mean, we have two kids under 3 – be realistic we told ourselves! We started slow… getting settled until my sister came in June and we took our first big trip to Bali for 5 days. We made that trip as fool proof as possible too. Lined up transportation to and from the airport, spent most of our time at the resort and hired a driver for a day tour up north. It was honestly perfect for what we needed at that time. We hadn’t relaxed like that on a beach vacation in years, definitely not since the two kids, and it was probably our honeymoon 7 years ago!

Next was Cambodia. Rachel was so sweet to watch Finley for 2 nights while Ross, Riley and I adventured to Siem Reap and Angkor Wat. That was a bit more adventurous. Taxi from the airport but other than that tuk tuks were the preferred mode of transport and Riley absolutely loved it! He was almost 9 months at the time which was perfect. A bit mobile but not walking yet – he dozed on and off throughout the day on me or Ross, in the tuk tuk, during our food tour. We definitely felt a bit more adventurous on our second trip.

Our close friends, the Candetos visited and stayed in Hong Kong for two weeks before heading off to explore for two weeks. They invited us to join for a few days in Taipei which was trip 3. We love traveling together – CB an John spent years in Singapore and Malaysia so are much more comfortable with the culture here and push us out of our comfort zone a bit, exploring markets, trying new foods, and checking out the most authentic experiences. We loved Taipei! We did get a few extra days to enjoy it when the Hong Kong airport was shut down during the protests; honestly it couldn’t have worked out better. It just meant Ross worked from there and Finn, Ry and I got to explore a new city, new playgrounds and new coffee/ice cream shops. Win, win win!

It looks like our time in Hong Kong will be shorter than initially expected, so recently we’ve felt the push to get in as much as we can before we leave. Hence, a last-minute trip to Bangkok! It always takes us ages to decide where to book – there are just so many new places we want to see! Plus, there are lots of other factors we take into account direct flights, best flight timing, good hotel options, somewhere we can take public transportation so we don’t have to lug around big car seats, etc. the list goes on!

Anyway, with Bangkok being so much fun and a great success, we were itching to get another trip in before our next visitors. Back to the search – Google Flights is my new best friend. You can type your departure city and dates (or not even dates) and it gives you all the options with one simple search. Dangerous because I want to go EVERYWHERE. It’s always been a fantasy to get to the airport with a bag packed, pick a city and hop on a plane!

Seoul was the lucky winner for the weekend of November 15th. We’d heard mixed reviews in our quick round of surveys, but for us, and this particular trip, it looked perfect (also helped that it was the cheapest option we found a week before takeoff). Train to the hotel? Check. Kid friendly? Check. Marriott hotel on points? Check. Direct flight on reputable airline? Check. Breweries? Check. Enough to see to keep us busy but not so much we’re overwhelmed? Check. Ross and Riley were still getting over colds and bronchitis, so we knew we’d have to take things slower than usual.

I can sum up our Seoul trip up in 5 lines…

  • Breweries

  • Rain

  • Korean Food

  • Palaces

  • The People

Yep, that’s about all we did.

Breweries:

1.       Jafa Brewing

2.       The Booth

3.       Awesome Beer Company

4.       Seoul Beer Works

5.       Soeul Brewery

6.       Won Nation

7.       Magpie Brewing

8.       Mysterlee Brewing

Rain:

Don’t love admitting it but the weather was definitely more ‘fall like’ than we’ve experienced since January, and we aren’t totally outfitted for it… the Koreans were in winter coats, scarves, gloves (I mean I thought they were a little dramatic it was like 40-50 degrees… ). Our gang was in layers of leggings, sweaters, sweatshirts, and Converse.  Which combined with lots of rain, is why we spent most of our time jetting in and out of breweries and on the train to various neighborhoods.

Korean Food:

1.       BBQ

2.       Bibimbap

3.       Street Food

4.       Bulgogi

5.       Lots of things I don’t know how to spell

DELICIOUS!!!

Palaces

1.       Changdeokgung Palace

2.       Changgyeonggung Palace

Finley absolutely loved running around and exploring with her map. Rosy cheeks and all.

The people

As we’ve experienced everywhere we have visited in Asia. The people are just wonderful. So kind and loving towards our two little ones. Giving them treats, helping them at dinner, playing patty cake, just so amazing and warm.

Week 2 Coffee Update

Three shifts down, and so far, I absolutely love it! Even after chasing two toddlers, after 4.5 hours my back was done… but I was happy. I really don’t know if it’s the customers or the coffee that make me happier. I have loved learning more about making craft coffee – how to tamp and pull espresso, the importance of the grind, cleaning the machine, and I’m just starting to learn more about the milk and how to get a good froth. It is so much more complex than latte art and that’s not easy! Everyone has their different styles too – the owner and general manager are all about business. They make the coffee, but it’s about speed and getting things done efficiently while being friendly to the customer. Then there are the two full time baristas – Benson and Yogesh. Both are photographers. Benson recently graduated and is a Hong Konger. Yogi is from Nepal. They have their different styles, but you can tell they take pride in making the coffee properly and are passionate about latte art. Don’t get me wrong, they are both lightning fast too – it is like they are doing a dance when they start on the coffee machine. Everyone has been so kind to teach me, and I can’t wait to keep practicing.

Hmm…. Ross – what do you think about an espresso maker for Christmas? 20 minutes later….

A quick Google search – UK to US Espresso maker led me to this beautiful site - https://www.home-barista.com/

SO MUCH KNOWLEDGE and passion for the craft. Reminds of when we started brewing beer and can be totally overwhelming. I feel like I need decades to master coffee which can totally paralyze me – I realize I just need to start somewhere. And now I have a hobby!

When I told Ross that I’d had my 4th coffee of the day earlier this week, he said be careful drinking so much coffee ... you will turn into a coffee bean. I’m ok with that… may help me keep up with Finley. Not.

I got a job!

My dreams of working in a coffee shop are finally coming true! And it is hilarious that we moved to London for my job and Ross worked in a coffee/juice/sandwich shop. We move to Hong Kong and I get a part time job in a coffee/juice/sandwich shop. My new gig is at Blend and Grind. It was one of the first shops we’d heard about from Ross’ co-workers and one that we frequent often. Ross’ co-worker Alyce likes it because of the cute barista and I’m starting to wonder if that’s why my sister went there daily during her two-month stay… hmm.

Ross and I have always had dreams of opening a coffeeshop or coffee truck and figure what a better way to get prepared than to work in one!

Bangkok in 12 hours.

36 Hours New York Times articles inspired many of our travels in Europe and now in Asia. We love them and they have yet to lead us astray. Fun activities, local art, restaurants, etc. are packed into 36 hours which is awesome. In Bangkok we unintentionally packed what felt like 36 hours into 12 … with two little ones.

We were a bit ambitious from the start... we packed light – a diaper bag, 3 small backpacks and a yo-yo stroller (if you travel at all with young kids, you need one of these). We headed on the train Friday afternoon from Hong Kong Station to the airport. After hearing the traffic can be nuts in Bangkok, we didn’t want to risk getting stuck for hours in a taxi with two cranky little ones. And we also loathe lugging the car seats around... solution? Public transport and becoming pack mules! Our flight was delayed a bit so landing at 5:30, we didn’t make it to the hotel until 7:30 after cramming ourselves onto a full train. When we arrived, instead of trying the cool, local restaurant I’d found or making it up to the rooftop bar for a cocktail, we hit up the hotel lounge for free food for the kids and Ross and I ordered in some of the best pad thai we’ve ever had. Win. Win. Oh and Finley skinny dipped in the rooftop pool. Perfect Bangkok night.

Thanks to Ross living on the road, Marriott treats him pretty well; this time, we were lucky enough to get a larger room and had somewhere to relax together after the kids went to sleep (somewhere other than the bathroom… which we have totally done). Like we have a habit of doing, we stayed up an hour too late drinking and talking and were totally dragging the next day. I forgot to mention Ross had landed after a red eye from Sydney THAT MORNING… so in true Ross and Katie fashion we decided why not just head to Bangkok later that afternoon? After breakfast, coffee and a shower Saturday morning, I think we finally agreed it was a good call.

First stop temples! In Bangkok, you are spoiled for choice – since we only had a day, we went with a couple hard hitters by checking Wat Arun and Wat Pho. Wat Arun is one of the most iconic and gorgeous with painted tiles, statues and steep stairs. Wat Pho has the largest reclining gold Buddha in the world and it didn’t disappoint. Finley had fun dropping the coins in buckets (need to learn more about Buddhism) on her way out and carrying her shoes in a plastic bag (etiquette to remove shoes and they provided a bag to put them in). She felt like the biggest girl and it was awesome to see the sights through her eyes.

Next stop lunch at a local street vendor – complete with a bottle of Chang Beer. Since we got through things faster than expected, we decided to tie in Chinatown which supposedly has the best Chinese (not too excited about considering where we live) and Thai (very excited about). Our favorite was banana and egg roti which was a essentially a Thai crepe with condensed milk, egg and banana. WOW. We did discover that food markets, food tours, really anything to do with food is tough on little Ry because he wants to eat EVERYTHING. Finley loves grilled meats and ice cream.

Next stop was Lumphini Park and a token playground. We love checking out parks during our travels because it gives us a feel for what it’d be like if we lived in those cities.  I’m realizing something I miss in Hong Kong is accessible green space. There is so much natural beauty in HK but it’s a little tougher to access where we live.

Final stop of the day and so worth getting back on the train to Sukhumvit was Artbox Thailand. Totally up our alley – an outdoor market with cool lights, food vendors, beer, artisans and local music. A perfect, relaxing way to end a busy, Bangkok day.

The kiddos were absolute champs. Both napped either on one of us or in the stroller, tried all the food, saw all the sites and were happy 98% of the time. I forgot, we did make a short detour to get Riley some extra diapers… I guess what goes in must come out and I underestimated just how much would be going in. #rileydoesntmissameal

What a year, what a blur.

WHAT A YEAR! What a blur. Sleepless nights, new friends, new countries, long hours, lots of stress, lots of fun, lots of life and lots to be thankful for. We love our little family and have had an absolute blast on this adventure.

I am notoriously bad at keeping an updated blog. The worst part is I totally love it when I do… take it back, the worst part is that I had written page and pages, but they were all lost forever when my Windows Surface crashed and died. I was working on it in a coffee shop one minute and the flashing logo of death was blinking the next. And, of course, I am so technologically advanced that I had it saved… in one spot, on my desktop, with no back up… anywhere. After two months of mourning, I’m finally getting back to it.

And in the whirlwind of the last 9 months, we’re back in Manly (aka the beach in Sydney, Australia). Ross is here for work again and the kids and I get the immense joy of joining for a few weeks! Such a different experience in the winter/spring compared to the balmy summer we experienced, but it’s still every bit as wonderful. My close friend CB once told me that if we were a place embodied, we would be Sydney, Australia. I think Manly more specifically but I couldn’t agree more. There is so much we love about this place – the laidback atmosphere, spending our days in beachwear, drinking copious amounts of coffee, enjoying cold craft beer, being inherently active all while staring at the most beautiful coast.

Prior to getting to Manly, we spent 3 weeks visiting friends and family across the US. I’m realizing we never do anything small or keep things simple and easy. Rather than just spending a couple weeks in one place, it was 2 extraordinarily long flights and 4 short ones to 5 places in 2.5 weeks. We started by flying from Hong Kong to LAX to see Ross parents and extended family. The 16-hour flight couldn’t have gone better, the jetlag couldn’t have gone worse. We said this trip would be spiritually rejuvenating and physically exhausting and that was spot on. We had the absolute best time while sleeping just a few hours every night.

Everyone asks how the flights were. I’d do the flight any day of the week and they really weren’t bad at all – highly recommend flying overnight though so the kiddos will just sleep most of it. Jetlag on the other hand, I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. Going west was the worst. I’m not convinced we ever really adjusted. Landing in Sydney wasn’t an issue, 3 days in we felt like a million bucks!

We started our trip ‘home’ in Southern California with Ross’ whole family. Beach, family photos, breweries, Knott’s Berry Farm, delicious food, duffy boat, paddle boarding, bike riding, swimming, the list goes on and on. We couldn’t have asked for a better trip. Thank you Randy and Diana!

Next was Wyoming for my cousin Genevieve’s wedding. Long Beach > Salt Lake > Cody, WY. We met up with my mom, Andrew and Rachel when we arrived and waited for Dad, Lainey and Hattie to make it in with the air stream from Eastern Washington. We drank good beer, walked through beautiful Wyoming countryside, checked out Cody and Red Lodge, watched pig racing and attended the most thoughtful, gorgeous wedding in the whole world. It was such a wonderful time to be together with my whole family in such a special place.

On to Washington via a short overnight in Butte, MT. Babies on long car drives are such a crapshoot. As soon as you plan to make it hours, they just can’t hang. When you’re prepared to stop in half an hour, they’re good for 4… you just never know. We’ve learned flexibility is the name of the game. We also got a 4 hour late start that morning when our rental van had a flat tire and good ol’ Hertz didn’t send a spare.

Making it to Washington, we got a few nights to catch up with friends, enjoy some good barn, tractor, Ranger, horse time, visit our Papa and of course grab a cheeky pint at Ice Harbor (our favorite local brewery that supplied the booze for our wedding on Hatton Road).

A trip stateside wouldn’t be complete without a stop in the Big D for some quality time with great friends; and we also got to celebrate baby Harvey’s impending arrival! Visiting family is wonderful but there is something about being with our best friends that is so darn relaxing and rejuvenating too.

It was tough to leave.

Thankfully we eased back into reality with a stay in Sydney (aka our happy place) … after a 17 hour flight, that the kids absolutely rocked. They never cease to amaze me.

God is good and we are blessed.

Welcome To Hong Kong

We made it… and lived to tell the tale… at least so far! Moving around the world with a 2-month-old and 2-year-old is no joke, but at the exact same time has been the most wonderful experience we could imagine.

Let’s take it back to the beginning. In December 2018, we packed up and headed on a whirlwind adventure to visit family and friends over Christmas. Crazy to think we stayed in our condo on Hawthorne for the last time on December 8th and spent the next 3.5 weeks on the road before you know, flying 18 hours to Sydney. Portland, OR > Connell, WA > Sandpoint, ID > Seattle, WA > Park Cities, UT > Los Alamitos, CA > Dallas, TX

We made it back to Dallas for a few nights in our old house before ‘moving’ to Sydney, Australia for a few weeks or a few months (I would have stayed forever! I mean other than the fact that we’d be thousands and thousands of miles from everyone we know and love. They’d all move there with us, right?).

Our expat life started in Manly which is a beach community in the north of Sydney. We owe it all to my friend Jess who lived in Sydney and said we MUST live at the beach while we’re there – especially since it was the middle of summer and we were only there for a short time. Luckily Ross didn’t need to go to the CBD (downtown Sydney) often but when he did it was by fast ferry. Talk about the best commute in the world!! Finley, Ry and I would join from time to time and it became ‘Finn’s boat.’ Even now, you say ‘Hey Finn, want to go on a boat?’ She says, ‘Me see Opera House!’ We’ve set the bar high….

Being in Sydney was a surreal, amazing experience. Although Ross and I did start referring to it as ‘purgatory in paradise’. It was a bit strange to be there indefinitely, in someone else’s house. Once our visas came through and we had our move date, we really soaked in every single minute.

We flew to Hong Kong on March 24th – giving us the chance to celebrate Ross’ birthday in Oz with two of our closest friends, Eric and Allison. Finley was the sweetest well-wisher you will ever meet. She spent hours making and decorating his cake and told him Happy Birthday every chance she got. He got to celebrate with one of his favorite coffees, watch Kelly Slater surf and walk through a VW van show. I think he had a pretty great day.

We made it to Hong Kong just barely in one piece the next day. We crushed the departure from our Airbnb, getting our million bags of luggage checked, navigating the airport… and it all went downhill after takeoff. We made the mistake of flying during Finley’s naptime… that she didn’t take. We’re all lucky to have survived. It did make for a pretty hilarious arrival in HK watching her deliriously wander around baggage claim. We made it to our new home!

After two nights in a hotel, we officially moved into our new apartment in the Mid-levels neighborhood in Hong Kong. A month and a half later, I’ll venture to say we’re ‘settled’ which is a pretty amazing feeling. Still have lots to learn about our new city and aside from Ross’ sweet co-worker Joe, wouldn’t say we have any friends... I take that back; Finley has made friends with everyone in the building and Riley with all the ladies in the grocery store. Oh, and Ross with the man at the French cheese shop! I guess we’re getting there...

Riley Wayne Hill

It’s not like with Finley I was miss super organized and had a scrapbook or anything but at least I made notes each month about our little lady and her BIG personality. I think I wanted to make sure I had something written I didn’t totally forget Finley’s babyhood, I also wanted to have some notes for next time! And I’ve been so thankful to be able to look back and say oh yeah Finley did the same thing by Ry’s age... can totally see if we have a third we’ll do it with our eyes closed.

Our little ‘Ry Guy’ just turned one (ahhhhhhhhhhh) and I am totally still wrapping my head around it. Hurts to admit but I do feel like I will actually forget about his babyhood. Talk about a crazy year. He was a pretty terrible sleeper and I really can’t fault him for it – no routine, moving around the world, sleeping in our room, the list goes on and on. That, combined with me being a total stay at home mom for the first time, led to my brain being total mush for the better part of his first year. Don’t get me wrong, we had a blast, I just don’t remember much of it. Things I’ll never forget though:

1.       His cheesy smile

2.       His love of eating

3.       His sweet, cuddly personality

4.       How he focuses on a task and gets so excited when he has something to work on

5.       Grunting when he poops

6.       How much he loves his sister

7.       The ladies at the grocery store calling him ‘happy boy’ or ‘lucky boy’ and him kicking his legs with joy

8.       His two-handed, excited wave

9.       Clapping his hands when we say ‘yay’

10.   His first steps at a Sydney brewery

Finley Elaine Hill

Our sweet Finley Elaine made her debut on December 12th 2016 after 32 hours of labor, a Cowboys loss and an unplanned c section. She was just so cozy and wanted to make sure we knew what a sacrifice she was making by leaving her comfy home of 9 months. Finley was born at 21 1/8 inches (dad was rounding up to 21.2in.) and 8 lbs. She has been making waves and showing off her strong, stubborn, feisty and adorable personality ever since. I think it’s safe to say she already has the entire Hill/Pierson clan wrapped around her little finger.

1 Month (January)

During Finn’s first month of life, she’s visited 5 breweries, two states and celebrated her first Christmas. She left the hospital at 7.5 lbs. and by the time we went back for her 2-week appointment, she’d gained it all back. You could say she takes after her parents with her love for eating. Unfortunately, she had a case of thrush and had to use mouthwash 4 times a day – Dr. Lewis said she’d probably spit it out, which is completely fine. Not our girl; it was the best part of her day and she swallowed every drop. Reminds me of her grandpa

Pierson who will eat (and enjoy) just about anything… including medicine!

2 Months

By the time Finley celebrated her 2-month birthday, she was smiling like a total goofball, made a trip to the ER for RSV and started loving her play mat and hanging out on her changing pad. I’ve heard of the ‘wonder weeks’ and (so far) I wholeheartedly believe in them. She had a rough couple of days during grandpa Pierson’s visit – lots of smiles coupled with lots of screams. A couple days later, she was discovering her hands – opening and closing them – staring at her long little toes and following shadows on the walls. That was at 8 weeks – the week of patterns!

At her two-month checkup, Finley received an A+! She’s a healthy little creature. 10 lbs. 7 oz. (45%), 23 in. (75%) and Head circumference 39 cm (55%). She made it through her vaccinations like a champ.

It’s been fun to see her little personality shine through – she is so entertained by our smiling faces and voices. I think it’s safe to say, she’s made it through the ‘fussy newborn’ period. Now she just lets us know when she’s upset about something (hungry, dirty, sleepy or bored), and she doesn’t mince words J

3 Months

Most of Finley’s 3rd month was spent on the road. We travelled the country – Texas to California to Washington and back to Texas, with LOTS of states and adventures in between. I think everyone thought we were crazy. We were but in the best way. Hattie and Finley were the perfect girls and fellow adventurers. Finley has been to almost 40 breweries by this point and a dozen states. She got to meet her great grandmas and papa and the whole family. She is one loved little girl!

4 Months

By 4.5 months little Finn was a rolling machine. She would wake up in the middle of the night just to practice J I think she started rolling so soon because we stopped swaddling pretty early on. By 3 months, she was ripping out of the swaddle and still not sleeping. We decided to go cold turkey and just not deal with it anymore. The zipadee zip was our best friend and overnight she became the cutest sea lion you ever did see!

14 lbs. 4.5 oz. (65%), 26.25 in. (95%) and Head circumference 42.4 cm. (80%).

5 Months

Finley is starting to perfect her downward dog and rocking back and forth on all fours. She’ll be a moving machine before we know it. The day she decided she can roll over, we can’t leave her anywhere! She’s an active little bean. She laughs, smiles and engages more than ever now. She has discovered her best friend Hattie – oh the fun those two will have.

6 Months

Little Finn isn’t so little anymore… By 6.5 months, she was full on crawling. A week after that, pulling up on EVERYTHING. AND she has a tooth!! It feels like I woke up one morning and our baby was replaced by a little girl. We knew from day one she would be a force to reckon with and she is every bit as feisty, smart and amazing as we ever could have imagined. She is such a happy baby! She’ll speak her mind but for the most part such a joy to be around. The best part of being her mom is seeing what a light she already is. She has the ability to make absolutely everyone smile with one quick look – if she dares give them a coy smile, all barriers come crashing down.

7 Months

I’m not sure who is more excited about the introduction of Cheerios into Finn’s diet. Hattie or Finn? We’re still at the point that way more end up in Hattie’s mouth than Finley’s but all are having so much fun! We’ve yet to discover something Finn doesn’t want to eat… Guess she takes after mom and dad! She’s still figuring out textures and makes the sweetest, crinkly face when she tries avocado, eggs, or sweet potato chunks. Going out is getting a bit more difficult because instead of wiggling around on the table she wants to explore EVERYTHING! She still can’t sit still and loves getting to know new people and places.

17.2 lbs. (55%) 28 in. (95%) 44.4 cm head circumference (85%)

8 Months

Anna told me Finley is ‘hell on wheels’ when I dropped her off one day. She tells me daily that our little girl has a mind of her own and is a force to be reckoned with! If our 72-year-old babysitter who has watched dozens of babies is telling me we’ll have our hands full, my suspicions are confirmed. Finley Elaine has a mind of her own and she’s just 8 months old. Lord help us!

Just over 8 months old, Finley started putting herself to sleep and has had a handful of long, restful nights (5am wake-ups)

9 Months

Finley spent the first part of her 9th month on the farm. Mom and dad watched her for 9 days while I joined Ross in Hong Kong. It wasn’t easy on me but I know no one else suffered J Finley is definitely a farm girl at heart and loved all the animals. We all thought she may take her first step this month, but she isn’t in any hurry, and as my dad says, she has the perfect form in her crawling. Finley cut her top tooth which led to a few fussy days. Can’t believe what a big girl she is becoming. Her awareness of the world around her increases daily and she’s definitely becoming a mama’s girl which I can’t say I mind! Dada was her first word and Ross can take full credit for that. She sure loves her daddy and he’s been saying nothing but ‘dada’ to her since day one.

20.4 lbs. (75%) 29.25 in. (95%) 46.5 cm head circumference (88%)

10 Months

Finley has 4 teeth! She had a couple grumpy days and before we knew it, her second big front tooth was in. We’re still not sleeping great – she will have a great night, sleeping 8-9 hours and the next night be up twice screaming and just wanting to practice all of her new skills J Speaking of which, she’s started saying mama and sooooo close to taking her first step. A few of our favorite things to do include helping mom with her makeup, brushing our teeth and stealing Hattie’s bones. She has also perfected crawling up the stairs and we’re working on being a big girl when we crawl down. Can’t believe how grown up our little Finn is! She still has the wildest hair you’ve ever seen and a matching personality to boot.

11 Months

THE FINN IS WALKING!!! It took her a while to get her confidence up but basically right when she turned 10 months, she took her first few, wobbly steps. We couldn’t be prouder (and excited and terrified!). She has started eating more and more from our table and the sweet waiter at Café Brazil served her first pancake. I think she’s her daddy’s girl when it comes to her love for breakfast and Ross decided that Sunday mornings will include banana pancakes and the Beatles. Those two already have the sweetest relationship – there is no one Finley lights up more for than the daddy.

Anna told me ‘I don’t know what you and your husband created with this one’ hahaha!

12 Months

We made it! Finley Elaine has brought so much joy to our lives. She loves her puppy more than just about anything, she is a master stair climber, she loves doing the dishes and helping with just about every household task. She started to sleep through the night right around Thanksgiving. We were finally in one place long enough to get her on a routine and let her cry a bit when we put her down. Didn’t take long for her to figure it out and she’s been a champ ever since. Finley officially hit 70 unique breweries and went on 15+ flights by her 1st birthday. She is the most adaptable, sweet, independent, social baby you ever did see. We can’t wait for what the next year has in store.

13 Months

Finley is the best helper around. She does dishes, she helps put my shoes on and she LOVES to feed and walk Hattie. It is amazing the light bulb that went off at one year. She understands everything. It makes me realize how much she absorbed that first year of life. She is practically running and loves to wear her Nikes and big girl pull-over sweatshirt. For her birthday Grandma D and Granddaddy gave her a gift card to Toys R Us – Finley picked out a mop and broom set!

14 Months

Finley was back on the farm while mom and dad had a little weekend away in Whitefish, MT. Finley also became a future big sister during her 14th month! Boy does this girl love the farm. It’s been so fun to watch her become more and more aware of the animals. By the end of this trip, she was giving Pal kisses left and right!

15 Months

Finley is so curious about the world around her. One of her favorite past times is watching the airplanes go by. Ever since we moved into the condo, she has been so intrigued. She loves all animals – squirrels, birds, and don’t even get me started on how she feels about Hattie. OBSESSED. We had a trip to California where she got to spend lots of time exploring Cambria with Grandma D and Grandaddy and the whole crew. Grandma gave her her first FULL SCOOP of strawberry ice cream. That’s what grandmas are for, right?! We went to the DMA when she was just over 15.5 months old and I swear she was more into the art and artifacts than any adult. Pointing at and talking about everything; our little learner! After visiting aunt Jordan and uncle Chris’, Finley learned how to open doors.. she hasn’t quite figured out knobs but has our French doors mastered. Eek! Right about 15 months is when bedtime became fun! She knows the drill – I tell it’s time for bath and she climbs the stairs, helps start the tub, gets undressed (i.e. I undress her.. we’re not quite that advanced!), helps put her diaper in the pail and laundry away and in the tub she goes. She has it down pat! Still giving her a couple ounces in her nighttime bottle during story time… not looking forward to giving that one up!
